词汇搭配Collocation的重要性

在雅思写作和口语考试的官方评分标准里，7分一栏写着这样一句话：

> uses less common lexical items with someawareness of style and collocation

> uses some less common and idiomatic vocabularyand shows some awareness of style and collocation,with some inappropriate choices

Collocation这个词的意思是“正确的搭配”

Word partners or words that are commonly used together by nativespeakers

例如“学知识”，常见表达是acquire knowledge, 而非learnknowledge.

词汇搭配不易掌握，因为没有特定的规律可循，需要长期大量接触原文材料并且留心学习。

Verb + Noun

1.     旅游真能令人开拓眼界

Travelling really broaden one’s horizons.

开拓眼界is “broaden one’s horizons”NOT open one’s eyes (which means make one see something that he didn’t believe)

2.     我想念硕士

I want to do a master degree.

the verb should be “do”,NOT learn or study.

3.     我的爸爸经营一间公司。

My father runs a company.

To say run a company ismore natural than manage company.

4.     她已经提交了签证申请。

She has lodged her visa application.

提出申请 is make/lodge anapplication, NOT raise an application

Adjective + Noun

1.     这门英语课是为中级学生开设的，不是针对初学者

This English course isfor intermediate learners, not for beginners.

[NOT middle-levellearners]

2.     他喜欢喝浓茶

He prefers strong tea.

“浓” for tea or coffee should be“strong” instead of powerful (which sounds strange).

3.     我的家乡有丰富的历史和文化。

My hometown has a rich history and culture.

To say rich is morenatural than colourful.  

4.     我因为堵车迟到了。

The heavy traffic made melate for my appointment.

Instead of using “crowded”,heavy sounds more natural.
